Advanced Hormone, DNA & Functional Testing
Many of the clients we see have already had standard testing.
They’ve been told everything is “within range.”
And yet they’re still experiencing fatigue, irregular or painful cycles, significant PMS, acne, bloating, anxiety, fertility challenges, or brain fog.

Advanced functional and DNA testing can sometimes help us understand why symptoms are persisting and what may be driving them.

We don’t recommend extensive testing for everyone.
But when symptoms are ongoing, complex, or not responding to treatment, more detailed investigation may be appropriate.

Below are the advanced testing options we may discuss and why we would consider each one.
01
DNA Gut Microbiome Testing
When digestive symptoms aren’t improving we may consider DNA gut microbiome testing when someone is experiencing persistent digestive symptoms that are not resolving with basic dietary changes or standard treatment.
This may include:
-
Bloating
-
Gas
-
Abdominal discomfort
-
IBS
-
Alternating constipation and diarrhoea
-
Food sensitivities
-
Ongoing inflammation
Your gut microbiome refers to the community of bacteria and microorganisms living in your digestive tract. These bacteria influence:
-
Breakdown and fermentation of food
-
Short-chain fatty acid production
-
Integrity of the gut lining
-
Immune activation within the gut
-
Inflammatory signalling
-

When the microbial balance is disrupted, symptoms can persist despite eliminating foods or trying supplements.
DNA gut microbiome testing helps answer the question:
What is actually happening within your gut environment?
It allows us to assess:
-
Bacterial diversity
-
Overrepresentation of inflammatory species
-
Reduced beneficial strains
-
Patterns linked to IBS or gut barrier dysfunction
This information allows for a targeted and structured plan, rather than trial-and-error dietary restriction or generic probiotic use.

02
DUTCH Hormone Testing
The DUTCH hormone test provides detailed information about hormone levels and how they are being metabolised.
We may consider this test if there are symptoms such as:
-
Severe PMS or PMDD
-
Irregular cycles
-
PCOS
-
Endometriosis
-
Perimenopause symptoms
-
Stress-related hormonal changes
This test helps answer:
Are hormone levels out of balance or is the way your body is processing hormones contributing to symptoms?
04
Vaginal Microbiome Testing
We may recommend vaginal microbiome testing when there are recurrent or ongoing symptoms such as:
-
Thrush
-
Bacterial vaginosis
-
Vaginal irritation
-
Pelvic discomfort
-
Fertility challenges
Standard GP laboratory testing is designed to detect acute infections such as Candida or common bacterial pathogens. This is appropriate for identifying active infections. However, it does not always assess the broader microbial ecosystem of the vagina.
Advanced vaginal microbiome testing is more comprehensive. It evaluates:
-
Overall bacterial balance
-
Protective Lactobacillus species levels
-
Microbial diversity
-
Subclinical imbalances that may not register as acute infection
This helps answer the question:
Is the vaginal environment itself out of balance, even if standard swabs appear normal?

For women experiencing recurrent thrush or BV, the issue is often not just infection but an underlying microbial imbalance that allows symptoms to keep returning.
By understanding the full microbial profile, we can develop a more targeted plan aimed at restoring stability and long-term balance, rather than repeatedly treating isolated flare-ups.
